CATS at SSMM (Saab Salomon Mountain Mayhem) 24 Hours
June 25-26, 2005

The CATS were out in force at the SSMM. 2 mixed teams and two solo-nutter-men(Mark and Richard - say no more). Fun was had by all. Good to see a bigger CATS turnout from last year. Gaye was talking of a CATS womens team next year - excellent!

Unsung athlete Gaye claims magnificent treble

MODEST Gaye Taylor was just pleased to be at the Mail’s Sports Awards 2004 as a nominee.

Which is why she was in total shock when she left the presentation dinner at Harborough Leisure Centre with an amazing treble triumph under her belt.

Gaye’s evening was capped when she was awarded the coveted Sports Personality of the Year crown.

But that came after she had picked up the Unsung Hero title – and shared in the Team of the Year success as a member of the
triumphant Harborough Athletics Club Ladies.

“I love my sport and put in a lot of hard work but I just didn’t expect anything like this,” said a bewildered Gaye. “What a treble!”

Unsung Hero 2003 Winner

Chris Holliday of sponsors Harborough District Council presents Neil Holman with his trophy

THERE are many unsung heroes on the local sporting scene but the one who shone above the rest to pick up the prize of Unsung Hero of the Year was dedicated cyclist Neil Holman from Harborough.

He said: “I was extremely surprised. I just do it without a second thought, but it’s a real honour to win.

“I do it for the love of the sport and have been involved in cycling for 13 years. I try to bring people up from grassroots level and raise awareness of the sport. Events like the Sports Awards show that you don’t have to be a Martin Johnson to be recognised.”

SWISS-born cyclist, but now very much part of Harborough’s sporting scene, Patrick Schalbetter (34) was named Sportsman of the Year.

He said: “It’s a great feeling to win. I do a lot of training and it’s a nice reward for the hard work I have put in over the year.

“I’ve had a great night at the Sports Awards and want to thank the people who voted for me.”
